SSL/TLS Status feature in cPanel

The SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It is used to create an encrypted connection between the client and the server. This will help to prevent many attacks and eavesdropping. Also, SSL plays an inevitable role in the SEO.

We do install an SSL certificate to make a website secured with SSL. It can be a self-signed certificate or a certificate from a trusted authority. If the certificate we use is a self-signed certificate, the web browsers will not be trusting the certificate and will show a not secured sign on the address bar, where your digit in the URL of a website. If the certificate is issued by a trusted authority, the browsers will show a secured icon for your website.

A control panel like cPanel allows you to install SSL certificate. How to check whether an SSL certificate is installed on the website? How to check if the certificate is a self-signed one or from a trusted authority? There are many online tools to check this. An example is https://www.sslshopper.com/. But is there a server side option to check this without logging via SSH and using commands? The cPanel offers an interface to do such verifications. In this documentation, we are going to see how to check the SSL/TLS status from cPanel. It will cover is there a certificate installed for a domain and whether the certificate is a self-signed one or from a trusted authority.

 Steps to check the SSL/TLS status

Step 1: Login to cPanel

You can login to the cPanel by appending the cPanel port to the domain name. An example is shown below.

eg: https://www.domain.com:2083

Step 2: Go to SSL/TLS Status

Now we are in the cPanel. Next, we need to go to SSL/TLS Status from cPanel. You could find the option from the section Security.

This interface will show you the list of the domains under the cPanel account and the details of the certificate installed. It will show all the domains including the sub-domains, add-on domains, etc. There will be a symbolic representation of the certificate installed. It will show lock like symbols to describe the certificates. If it is a self-signed certificate, it will show only one lock and if it is a certificate from a trusted authority, it will show more locks. The next column on the page describes the type of certificate. ie., if it is a self-signed certificate, it will be stated there. It will also show additional details like the certificate expiration date and if it will be renewed by the cPanel AutoSSL.

You can also view the certificate installed on this page. You could also install a new certificate from this interface. The relevant screenshots are attached below.

To install the certificate, you could do it from the next window. After browsing the certificate, you could install it by clicking on the button “Install Certificate”.
