What is AAAA Record? How to add AAAA record in cPanel?

AAAA record is also known as a quad-A record. It similar to the A record, but it allows to point the domain to an Ipv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6 address) address. IPv4 addresses are 32 bits, and IPv6 addresses are 128 bits, so if an A record is 32 bits, 4xA (AAAA) is 128 bits.

IPv6 has a larger address space which consists of 8 sets ranging from 0000-FFFF. IPv6 provide protocol enhancements for security as well as many other features and it is not freely available from most internet service providers (ISP) and is not widely used to date.  IPV6 adoption is increasing and will become more relevant in the coming years. An IPv6 address is represented as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits in which each group representing 16 bits, these groups are separated by colons (:).

A typical AAAA record looks like the following format

example.com     AAAA        0123:4567:89ab:cdef:0123:4567:89ab:cdef

IPv6 Addressing modes

1) Unicast: In unicast addressing mode it identifies a single network interface. This interface is equipped with an IP address which is unique in that network segment and the Internet Protocol delivers packets sent to a unicast address to this specific interface.

2) Multicast: In multicast addressing mode a packet that is sent to a multicast address is delivered to all interfaces that have joined the corresponding multicast group.

3) Anycast: This is assigned to a group of interfaces, usually belonging to different nodes. A packet sent to an anycast address is delivered to just one of the member interfaces.

Features of IPv6

1) Stateless Auto-reconfiguration of Hosts: It allows IPv6 host to configure automatically when connected to a routed IPv6 network.

2) Network-layer security: IPv6 implements network layer encryption and authentication via IPsec.

3) Extensibility

4) Smooth Transition

5) Faster Forwarding/Routing

6) Simplified Header
