Enable DNS Cluster from WHM

As we all know, the DNS plays a vital role in web hosting. The DNS helps to map a domain to an IP address and an IP address to a domain name (Host Name). It is necessary to have good DNS servers because they redirect us to the respective servers when we call a domain name on a web browser like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.

If there are no DNS servers for a domain name, it will not be accessible to the public. Servers are identified by their IP address’. It is not practical for humans to remember the numerical IP addresses for websites because it is too hard to memorize the IP address of a number of websites. The IP address will be in the format of 00.00.00.00. The digits in IP address can be 1 to 3 in length. So it may not be possible to remember the IP address of multiple websites. That is the reason we use domain names. The domain names can be easily memorized. But these domain names should be later translated to corresponding IP addresses. This is where DNS (Domain Name System) can help you.

As we have seen earlier, the DNS translates a domain name to its IP address and IP address back to its domain name. So there should be good DNS servers for the website should be up always. Here arises the need for DNS clustering.

What is DNS Clustering?

DNS Cluster is a group of DNS servers. They share the DNS records with each other. There could be replicas of DNS settings on another server. If there is an issue with one of the servers, the other server will serve the requests to make the DNS work smoothly.

In this documentation, we are going to see how to enable DNS clustering from WHM interface on a cPanel server. Please note, that clusters must be installed on at least two servers to enable DNS Clustering.

1) Login to WHM

You could log in to the WHM using a web browser. You need to enter the IP address or hostname of the server followed by a colon and port number such as http://hostname:2086. If you need to access the WHM secured URL, you need to enter the below in the address bar of the web browser. https://hostname:2087. The difference here is the port number. Please note, you need to access the WHM, cPanel or Webmail accounts via SSL connection (Secured connection) to enable external authentication.

2) Go to Home >> Clusters >> DNS Cluster

Now you need to navigate to Clusters >> DNS Cluster from the Home page of WHM interface. I am attaching a few screenshots that will help you in enabling DNS Clusters yourself.

Now you will be redirected to the next page where you can see the below icons.

1) Configuration Cluster

2) DNS Cluster

3) Remote Access Key

You need to click on the second option which is “DNS Cluster” from the above options. Please refer the screenshot for clarification.

Now you will be redirected to the next page where you can choose how should you manage the DNS Cluster, from a drop-down menu. The default value for this option will be root and you could leave as it is. Now please click on the button “Enable DNS Clustering” to enable DNS Clustering as shown in the below screenshot.
